Consumers spending on essentials

January retail sales demonstrated that consumers last month were focused on buying necessities more than discretionary items. According to the National Retail Federation, retail industry sales for January -- which exclude automobiles, gas stations, and restaurants -- rose 2 percent above last year and 0.1 percent from December.

Port of Tacoma joins green power program

Port of Tacoma has added another item to its eco-friendly portfolio: support of renewable energy. The port recently pledged a $700-per-month commitment to the EverGreen Options program, making it one of Tacoma Power's largest purchasers of green power.

Tax collections weakened in January

Tax payments made to the state were considerably weaker last month, according to a Revenue Collection Report released this week by the state Economic and Revenue Forecast Council. Collections between Jan. 11 and Feb. 10 were $1.25 billion, or 2.8 percent less than expected.

Weyerhaeuser net earnings increase

Weyerhaeuser Co. has reported net earnings of $790 million for 2007 on net sales of $16.3 billion. This compares with net earnings of $453 million for 2006 on net sales of $18.7 billion.
