Health care is top concern for women

The U.S. economy is the top issue affecting women business owners, according to the sixth annual "What Business Women Want" survey conducted by Women Impacting Public Policy, the nation's largest bipartisan women's business group. This is the first time that the economy has led WIPP's poll.

People on the move

Enumclaw-based Helac Corp. is celebrating its 40th year of manufacturing helical, hydraulic rotary actuators and construction equipment attachments for customers in more than 42 countries around the world. To commemorate this event, Helac is inviting the public, business and educator from the community to attend an open house on May 14 from noon to 1:30 p.m. Events planned for the open house include a presentation of Helac's history and successes, a guided tour of its manufacturing facility and a catered lunch. Franchising outpaces other sectors

The franchising sector of the economy expanded by more than 18 percent between 2001 and 2005, adding more than 140,000 new businesses and 1.2 million new jobs to the nation's economy, according to a new economic impact study by the International Franchise Association. Direct economic output of franchises grew by more than 40 percent to $800 billion in 2005.
