Mason resort park faces fine for failing to obtain shoreline permits

The Robin Hood Village Resort Park in Mason County is being fined $12,000 by the state Department of Ecology for failing to comply with shoreline permitting requirements. The penalty was levied after the park owner failed to comply with an April 5 Notice of Correction to either apply to Mason County for required shoreline permits or to remove four rental units placed along Hood Canal shorelands. Permits are required under the Mason County Shoreline Master Program. Hood Canal is a Shoreline of Statewide Significance.

Gas prices, job stability could spark increased travel

A recent decline in gas prices and improving job security could entice more Americans to take advantage of vacation days during the upcoming peak travel season, which begins with the Memorial Day holiday.  An increase in summer travel is likely to result in more job creation, according to one employment expert, who noted that the leisure and hospitality industry is already seeing a hiring surge.

Summer travel outlook looks good

For the second consecutive year, the outlook for summer travel continues to brighten, with more than three in five U.S. adults (64 percent), or an estimated 154 million Americans, planning on taking at least one trip for leisure purposes during the next six months. The percentage of Americans planning to travel between May and October is up from 61 percent last April and 56 percent in April 2010.

ShoWare Center selected to host skating event

U.S. Figure Skating has selected ShoWare Center in Kent as the host venue for 2012 Hilton HHonors Skate America. The event is the first of six stops in the International Skating Union Grand Prix of Figure Skating Series.

TRCVB taps Brown as new leader

After a three-month nationwide search, the Tacoma Regional Convention + Visitor Bureau selected Bennish Brown as the organization’s new president and CEO. Brown has a strong background in the destination marketing industry and served the last 12 years as the executive director of Rock Hill/York County Convention and Visitor Bureau in South Carolina.

Volunteer needed for Lodging Tax Advisory Committee

Pierce County is seeking a volunteer to serve a four-year term on the Lodging Tax Advisory Committee, which meets several times a year to make a recommendation to the county executive and County Council regarding the allocation of taxes collected by the excise tax on lodging.
