Dr. Lorri Nichols has been named “Chiropractor of the Year” by the Washington State Chiropractic Association. She also was honored with the “President’s Gavel Award," which recognizes her leadership as President of the WSCA Board of Directors in 2011 and her contribution to the chiropractic profession over the years. Nichols operates Northwest Chiropractic Center in Federal Way. She is a 1983 graduate of Sherman College of Straight Chiropractic and has been in practice for 29 years.

Roadway safety funding benefits 40 Washington cities

Forty Washington cities will receive a share of $50 million in federal safety funds to construct 75 street improvement projects. These projects will reduce intersection-related collisions on city streets and on state highways that serve as city arterials.

Taxable retail sales increased 3%

Taxable retail sales increased 3 percent to $103.8 billion in calendar year 2011, the Washington State Department of Revenue reported today.

But while Pierce County's trade sector saw a slight uptick, its total taxable retail sales from 2010 to 2011 dropped by about 1 percent to roughly $10.5 billion. Thurston County taxable retail sales decreased by 1.23 percent to about $3.75 billion.

Weyerhaeuser earnings lower

Weyerhaeuser Co. reported net earnings of $41 million for the first quarter, or 8 cents per diluted share, on net sales of $1.5 billion. This compares with net earnings of $99 million on net sales from continuing operations of $1.4 billion for the same period last year.

NWMS honored for work in clinical trials

Northwest Medical Specialties was one of only six community oncology practices in the country to be recognized by the Conquer Cancer Foundation of the American Society of Clinical Oncology for work in improving cancer care through clinical trials programs.

Federal Way unveils "Think" ad campaign

Former Seattle Sounders player Lamar Neagle and local entrepreneur Jeff Stock are teaming up to promote Federal Way for businesses on the move. The Federal Way natives are featured in a new TV ad as part of the "Think Smart. Move Fast. Think Federal Way" campaign.

LTC Ombudsman Program moves to Federal Way

The King County Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program has relocated its offices from North Seattle to Federal Way. It joins its parent program, the Washington State Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program, operated by Multi-Service Center.

The Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program, mandated by the Federal Older Americans Act, is intended to improve the quality of life for residents of licensed long-term care facilities. Its purpose is to protect and promote residents' rights in long-term care facilities and assist in empowering residents to become self-advocates.

The Commons earns recycling award

The Commons at Federal Way has earned the city's 2011 Leadership in Recycling Award, which recognizes local businesses that increase recycling, reduce generation of waste and adopt other sustainable practices.

The Commons revamped its recycling efforts during 2011 to expand beyond recycling cardboard. The mall selected a new service provider that reduced service costs and expanded the range of materials that can be recycled.
