Mill workers in Kent strike, allege unfair labor practices

Workers at the Davis Wire mill in Kent went on strike early this morning. The company laid off 27 employees three days after workers voted to strike on May 12.

Kent project secures grant to build wildlife habitat

Amy Schillinger has secured a $2,400 grant through King County's “Wild Spaces in City Places” program for a project to increase wildlife snags at Kent’s Green River Natural Resources Area. Schillinger partnered with Rainier Audubon Society and the city to write the successful grant to build, install and monitor six artificial “snags” with volunteer help.

ShoWare Center selected to host skating event

U.S. Figure Skating has selected ShoWare Center in Kent as the host venue for 2012 Hilton HHonors Skate America. The event is the first of six stops in the International Skating Union Grand Prix of Figure Skating Series.

Taxable retail sales increased 3%

Taxable retail sales increased 3 percent to $103.8 billion in calendar year 2011, the Washington State Department of Revenue reported today.

But while Pierce County's trade sector saw a slight uptick, its total taxable retail sales from 2010 to 2011 dropped by about 1 percent to roughly $10.5 billion. Thurston County taxable retail sales decreased by 1.23 percent to about $3.75 billion.
