PopCap Games receives SBA’s Entrepreneurial Success Award
The U.S. Small Business Administration has selected PopCap Games as the 2012 Washington Entrepreneurial Success Award winner.
The three founders of PopCap, John Vechey, Brian Fiete and Jason Kapalka have developed cutting-edge online, mobile and social games since 1997, a time when the casual game genre was almost non-existent.
“To help guide their start-up, Popcap founder John Vechey received SBA assistance from the Washington Small Business Assistance Center” said SBA Seattle District Director Nancy Porzio. “An SBDC business advisor worked with founder and then CEO John Vechey to help figure out organizational issues, the power of focus, management solutions, and helped build a network of resources to help the rapid growth of PopCap.”
In 2000, PopCap launched Bejeweled which has since sold over 50 million units (selling a copy every 4.3 seconds). PopCap now has 56 games, 600 employees and annual revenue in excess of $100 million.
PopCap was sold to Electronic Arts in July 2011, for $1.3 billion, meaning the company grew in value at a rate of more than $100 million a year in just 11 years.
