Thurston commissioners approve boat restrictions for Lake St. Claire

Apr 26, 2012 - 10:00 AM

Thurston County commissioners have approved an emergency resolution temporarily lowering the maximum speed that a boat can travel on Lake St. Claire to 5 miles per hour.

The issue arose earlier this month after property owners expressed concern about shoreline property damage from boat wakes while water levels are extraordinarily
high.  Commissioners also included a temporary “no-wake zone” in the emergency resolution for Lake St. Claire within 200 feet of the shoreline due to the increased threat of damage to shoreline property and resources from boat wakes under elevated lake water levels.

The water level in the lake remains at levels not seen since 2000 and is receding very slowly, having dropped only about a tenth of a foot from April 4. The restrictions will remain in place until May 31 or when the water level reaches 69.5 feet or lower, whichever comes first.

A public hearing on the emergency restrictions will be held at 3 p.m. May 8 in Room 280, Building One of the Thurston County Courthouse.
