Blue waters, ‘green’ port
Port of Olympia received the 2017 Thurston “Green Business of the Year” award in the government category this week.
It is an admirable local honor, but Rachael Jamison, director of environmental programs for Budd Inlet’s port operation has an even higher aspiration.
“My personal goal is that within the next two to five years, Port of Olympia is looked to as one of the most sustainable mid-sized ports in the country,” Jamison says. “We do a tremendous amount of work for the environment (and) are working to inform our community of all the ways we are improving Thurston County.”
This latest award recognizes the Port’s working with partners on remediating local marine waters, developing a Tumwater Habitat Conservation plan, office recycling and low-flow toilets at the public Swantown Marine, as well as a pattern of environmentally responsible and sustainable practices.
