Controller enjoys ‘insurmountable’ problems
From his first customer service job that including bookkeeping entries, David Gleason says he “fell into” financial management years ago, working with small businesses even before taking his first accounting course, then completing a degree and passing the CPA exam.
That was good foundation for his subsequent work, including serving as Controller for PM Testing Laboratory Inc. in Fife for the past four years. His significant accomplishments there brought a nomination for 2017 South Sound Financial Executive of the Year.
“Numbers are much easier to manage than people,” Gleason says. Yet, “the real fun is expanding beyond just the finances, taking a holistic approach to business management (and) understanding how non-financial variables impact finances and vice versa.”
His work at the Fife company that supports manufacturers with non-destructive testing and inspection, has helped grow operating profits to begin an ownership transition, share profits with workers for their contributions to a 78 percent growth over four years, substantially reduce the firm’s tax exposure and fund a strategy to expand the physical plant.
“Numbers explain what is going on long before trends are noticed through other management methods,” Gleason says, “and if you know what’s coming, you can manage change.”
You can meet David Gleason and the other 13 finalists for South Sound Financial Executives of the Year on Wednesday, April 26, for a luncheon beginning at 11:30 a.m. in Historic 1625 Tacoma Place. Tickets are available here.
