Matson ships will use SSA in 2018

Apr 5, 2017 - 03:23 PM

Port of Tacoma regular caller Matson Navigation will be using a new provider for stevedoring and terminal services beginning next year.

A major U.S. carrier in the Pacific, Matson will use its joint venture partner SSA Terminals beginning January 1, 2018, after its existing agreement with APM Terminals expires.

"APMT has served us well,” says Ron Forest, senior VP-operations for Matson. “It just makes more sense to work with our strategic partner at Tacoma, as we do at all of our other terminals on the West Coast.”

The carrier expects a seamless transition and no change in its Tacoma operations from a customer standpoint.

Matson provides a lifeline to the economies of Hawaii, Alaska, Guam, Micronesia and select South Pacific islands with its scheduled service from West Coast U.S. ports. The company's fleet of 22 owned vessels includes containerships, combination container and roll-on/roll-off ships and custom-designed barges.
