New data to study for biz planning

Apr 20, 2017 - 04:37 PM

U.S. Census Bureau issued a wealth of new statistics today that can help local businesses better assess their marketplace. First, is an updated table of 2016 Population Estimates by State – the County and MSA break-outs will come later this year.

Washington state is now estimated to have 7,288,000 residents, ranking it #13 among the 50 states by population size. For the country as a whole, the population is 323,127,513 persons estimated for 2016.

More specifically useful for business assessment and marketing planning would be 2015 County Business Patterns (CBP) statistics. These cover more than 7.6 million U.S. business establishments, with employment and payroll data by industry.

While a bit more complicated to filter for download or analysis, quick finds for South Sound counties in 2015 show:

  • Pierce County had 244,855 persons employed at 17,012 establishments with an annual payroll of $10.8 billion
  • Thurston County had 68,684 persons employed at 6,039 establishments with annual payroll of $2.7 billion
  • Lewis County had 19,400 persons employed at 1,848 establishments with annual payroll of $741 million
  • Mason County had 9,770 persons employed at 1,005 establishments with annual payroll of $380.5 million
