One South Sound school among state's 'Best Value Colleges'

Apr 10, 2017 - 05:53 PM

University of Washington-Tacoma has improved on its 2016 showing on SmartAsset’s Best Value Colleges list, moving up from ninth in the state last year to third.

The Pierce County campus, with average scholarships and grants of $12,503 and an average tuition of $11,902, was beaten out only by two other University of Washington campuses — the campus in Seattle and satellite in Bothell.

The finance website’s study also took into account retention rate, student living costs and the starting salaries of a school’s graduates when ranking schools. Twenty-five percent weight was given to starting salary, tuition and living costs, with 12.5 percent weighting given to student retention rate as well as to scholarships and grants. After crunching the numbers, an index was created, where the number one school in the country was assigned a 100.

University of Washington-Tacoma scored a 48.12 on the College Education Value Index. University of Washington, the top school in the state, scored a 67.52.

Last year’s state top 10 also featured another South Sound school, Pierce County’s Pacific Lutheran University.
