Pierce jobs report for March is stellar
The local unemployment rate for Pierce County dropped below 6 percent for the first time this year in March, as employers added 2,200 new jobs to the local economy.
At 5.8 percent, this is well below the highest report (11.5 percent in 2010) for March in 2010, but remains 1 percent higher than the lowest January unemployment rate over the past 10 years.
Analysis by Workforce Central showed month-over-month gains in all industry sectors compared to February 2017, with none reporting one-month losses. Trade, Transportation & Utilities continues to have the largest gains, adding 3,400 jobs to the region from March 2016. Retail Trade counts 3,100 more jobs this year.
Overall, all Pierce County employers are issuing 8,700 more paychecks this month than they were in March of 2016.
