South Sound cities among fastest-growing in Puget Sound

Apr 28, 2017 - 05:01 PM

Puget Sound Regional Council has released an overview of the fastest growing cities in the Puget Sound region, and while Seattle and the East Side are well represented, the South Sound gets its due as well.

The entire region grew by more than 86,000 people last year, but two-thirds of that growth occurred within 10 cities. In terms of total population change, Seattle, of course, is first — the Emerald City’s population grew by 24,400 people, a jump of 3.7 percent. Sammamish grew by 11,270, a whopping 22.5 percent growth rate year over year.

Tacoma, which grew by 3,800 residents (1.9 percent), is fourth on the list, followed by Federal Way, which added 2,910 residents (3.2 percent). Kent and Auburn also appear in the top 10, adding 1,600 (2.0 percent) and 1,515 (2.0 percent) residents, respectively.

Ordered by percentage of population change, Sammamish tops the list with the aforementioned 22.5 percent growth rate. Three South Sound communities appear on that top 10: Gig Harbor, second in the list with 6.0 percent growth (510 people); Milton in third with 4.2 percent (310 people); and Fife in fifth wth 3.8 percent (365 people).
