Why?’ is the most important question
Greg Welch has been a controller or CFO some 19 years, so you can reliably assume that he knows his way around financial reports, spreadsheets and budgets. But this finalist for 2017 South Sound Financial Executive of the Year appreciates “soft” assets, too.
“I learned (from my dad) that people are the most important factor in an organization’s success,” Welch shares in a nominee questionnaire for the recognition event’s judges.
Believing that staff can be held accountable only for what they can control, the director of finance/operations/HR for the state’s chamber of commerce – Association of Washington Business – his approach is to ask questions.
“Understand things are the way they are for a reason. Find out the why(s) of everything – it is the most important question of all,” Welch says.
His nominator reports that Welch is a good steward of AWB members’ investments, as he manages the membership-based non-profit, its for-profit side and the Retrospective ratings program.
You can meet Greg Welch and the other 13 finalists for South Sound Financial Executives of the Year on Wednesday, April 26, for a luncheon beginning at 11:30 a.m. in Historic 1625 Tacoma Place. Tickets are available here.
