MultiCare East Pierce receives accreditation, planning residency program

Aug 24, 2011 - 02:04 PM
MultiCare Health System's newest clinic will soon be recruiting physicians who have recently completed their degrees for a new Family Medicine residency training program.
MultiCare East Pierce Family Medicine, which opened Aug. 1 at 1322 Third St. SE, Suite 240, on the campus of Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup, has received accreditation from the American Osteopathic Association. Since 2010, MultiCare Good Samaritan Hospital has hosted third- and fourth-year medical students from Pacific Northwest University, an osteopathic medical school in Yakima. In July, the second group of 10 students began training. This laid the foundation for the Family Medicine residency training program.

The new clinic will provide a three-year family medicine residency training program, planning to accept six residents each year with a full roster of 18 residents by 2014. The hope is that East Pierce Family Medicine residents will remain in the area to practice as physicians.

In the United States, a shortage of about 63,000 physicians is projected by 2015, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges, with greater shortages projected on the horizon -- 91,500 in 2020 and 130,600 in 2025.
