Planned power outage in Steilacoom

Aug 19, 2013 - 08:30 AM

Business is not running as usual in Steilacoom today. Power to the town is shut off from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. so maintenance crews can upgrade equipment at the Bonneville Power Administration Steilacoom substation, which is the town’s sole source of power.

Local businesses were notified in advance of the planned outage and have taken various courses of action.

Some, like KeyBank, brought in generators, while others have decided to close for at least a portion of the day.

Sound Credit Union has decided to close its Steilacoom branch on Monday. It gave employees the option of having the day off or working at another location.

Topside Bar and Grill is planning to host an employee barbecue today, according to town administrator Paul Loveless, but he’s unsure if the restaurant will open to the public after the power comes back on this afternoon.

A number of other restaurants have decided to close entirely for the day, he said.

Ferries are operating from Steilacoom to Anderson, McNeil and Ketron islands today, but riders have been notified to expect delays, said Loveless.

Loveless said a planned power outage happens about every five to eight years, so crews can work on the town’s substation.
