Big jump in Pierce workforce

Aug 24, 2017 - 05:40 PM

The number of individuals in Pierce County working or available to work during July skyrocketed by 8,753 — the largest single-month labor force increase in 24 years, according to analysis by Workforce Central, a coordinating group of local governments as related to employment issues.

The increased supply of available workers kept the local unemployment rate from improving more than its one-tenth percent reduction over the prior month. And it somewhat masks the addition of 8,430 new jobs reported by Pierce residents from June to July 2017.

Civilian employment has grown by 20,317 locally from the same summer month in 2016, with a net 9,800 more jobs added by employers in Pierce County. The largest monthly decrease in local jobs is reported in government, down by 500 jobs.

Year-over-year, Construction is showing the largest gains adding 3,000 jobs, while Leisure & Hospitality is up by 1,500 and there are 1,400 more jobs in the Educational & Health Services sector.
