Lollar Guitars, Tacoma college lauded for globalism

Aug 16, 2017 - 05:18 PM

World Trade Center Tacoma and U.S. Commercial Service have recognized a local manufacturer and Tacoma Community College for their successes with international activities and exports.

Lollar Guitars Inc. of Tacoma has expanded its exports of sound pickups for electric, bass and steel guitars to fulfill 20 percent of its total sales over the past 10 years. The woman-owned business is now selling into more than 30 countries, with global sales support creating at least three local jobs here.

TCC earned recognition for expanding international student enrollment from 270 to 450 since 2009, supporting 11 full-time and 8 part-time employees. The Tacoma economy gains additional benefits from these international students spending on accommodations, food and other purchases – the federal trade promotion agency figures the local area derived $15.6 million in economic activity from 668 international students.

Overall, Washington’s merchandise exporters, 90 percent of which are small and medium-sized enterprises, supported 375,000 jobs in 2015.
