Tacoma Works again to talk construction jobs

Aug 29, 2017 - 05:40 PM

Tacoma Works, the initiative launched to boost local construction employment, is hosting an event to educate and connect people to family-wage job opportunities.

The event is set for Thursday, Sept. 7, from 6-8 p.m. at the Bay Terrace Commencement Bay Room (2550 S. G St. in Tacoma). Workforce development, educational, non-profit, apprenticeship and pre-apprenticeship organizations will be present, along with prime contractors and representatives from both the City of Tacoma and the State of Washington.

Tacoma Mayor Marilyn Strickland launched Tacoma Works last March, in response to rapid growth by the construction industry in the Tacoma-Lakewood area. The kickoff event brought together contractors, job trainers and workforce development agencies to identify strategies for getting more people employed in the skilled trades and crafts, and related fields. Sept. 7’s event will be the second of three, with the third to be announced at a later date.
