Whole Foods to become Amazon on Monday

Aug 24, 2017 - 06:00 PM

With merger approvals from shareholders of Whole Foods and the federal government this week, Amazon is announcing that it will take over the up-scale food retailer as of next Monday.

Local markets like the store in University Place will take on a new brand and, the goliath retailer says, Amazon Prime participants will be seeing price reductions from the former Whole Foods schedule. The lower prices will be on a selection of best-selling staples across its stores, with much more to come.

“By working together with Amazon and integrating in several key areas, we can lower prices and double down on that mission and reach more people with Whole Foods Market’s high-quality, natural and organic food,” says John Mackey, Whole Foods Market co-founder and CEO.

“We’re determined to make healthy and organic food affordable for everyone,” says Jeff Wilke, CEO of Amazon Worldwide Consumer. “We will lower prices without compromising Whole Foods Market’s long-held commitment to the highest standards.”
