Health insurance fraud brings lock-up

Dec 29, 2016 - 04:37 PM

A 37-year-old Lewis County woman has been sentenced to 90 days incarceration after pleading guilty to first-degree theft.

Jolene Perez Owens admitted to a decade of misappropriating health insurance benefits by listing her boyfriend as a spouse to gain coverage by her employer-paid health coverage.

U.S. Postal Service funded the Group Health Cooperative coverage that added up to $350,000 in medical and prescription claims for her companion, whom she enrolled as her husband.

Perez will serve her confinement at her Mossyrock home on electronic monitoring and will be required to pay restitution in an amount to be determined later

Criminal charges were brought in Lewis County Superior Court, following an examination by Special Investigations Unit of the state Insurance Commissioner’s office. The postal service and inspector general of U.S. Office of Personnel Management participated in the investigation.
