New Tacoma Dome Amtrak station opens next week
A dedication for the new Amtrak Cascades Tacoma Dome station is set for Friday, just a few days before the new facility officially opens its doors to the public the following week.
Amtrak Cascades trains will begin running from the new station — and using the new Point Defiance Bypass route for the first time — on Monday. The bypass will route passenger trains to an inland rail line along the west side of I-5, through Tacoma, Lakewood and Dupont.
A ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the station will mark the culmination of the nearly $800-million Cascades High Speed Rail Capital Program. Some $180.7 million of those funds went toward the bypass.
The project has been a long one from start to finish, with the environmental and design process starting in July 2006.
The improvements will add two more daily round trips between Seattle and Portland; it also adds local public transportation options, with a Sounder station adjacent and Tacoma Link light rail and Pierce Transit buses across the street.
