150,000 unauthorized regional residents

Feb 9, 2017 - 05:10 PM

The Tacoma-Seattle-Bellevue marketplace has an estimated 150,000 unauthorized immigrants, placing metro-Puget Sound among the 20 largest concentrated areas housing residents from other countries without proper paperwork. More precise counts for each component city of the metro area are not available.

This analysis of government data by Pew Research Center shows that the nation’s unauthorized immigrant population is highly concentrated around large cities – New York New Jersey leads with an estimated 1.1 million. Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim is a close second at 1.0 million.

Nationally, unauthorized immigrants made up 3.5 percent of the total population in 2014. Unauthorized immigrants account for about one-in-four foreign-born U.S. residents.

The Center’s analysis relies on augmented data from the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey on unauthorized immigrants. That would include people who either crossed the border illegally or overstayed their visas.
