EPA funds local enviro training

Feb 24, 2017 - 04:33 PM

Federal funds for training new technicians to work in cleaning up contaminated sites is coming to a partnership of Clover Park Technical College, City of Tacoma and Goodwill.

The $200,000 Environmental Workforce Develop and Job Training grant was announced today on the Lakewood campus, with representatives of U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

“The EPA is proud to partner … to provide a gateway to careers in construction and site cleanup and bring much needed environmental improvements to Tacoma and Pierce County,” said the new EPA administrator, Scott Pruitt, in a statement from Washington, D.C. “Brownfields job training programs are a win-win for communities like Tacoma and others impacted by hazardous waste sites. They provide unemployed and underemployed citizens and transitioning servicemen and veterans with valuable technical skills that enable them to get good jobs in their communities.”

Goodwill uses its network of education campuses and case managers to recruit, career counsel and help students with job placement. CPTC performs the training, the City manages the partnership, providing overall grant administration.

Private businesses like TCB Industrial will recruit students into their ranks based upon their specific interest areas upon graduation from the program.

The next six-week training session begins April 21, but a mandatory two-hour course orientation for prospective students will be held at Goodwill’s main Tacoma campus March 13 or April 4 at 1 p.m. To see more information and register, visit www.goodwillwa.org
