Bill to keep Narrows Tolls flat passes Senate
Commuters from the Gig Harbor area will be happy to know progress is being made to make their commute a little more affordable. On Wednesday night, the Senate passed a bill to freeze tolls at the Tacoma Narrows Bridge at a fixed rate. The proposed toll rate for Good To Go! users would remain fixed at $5.25.
HB 2990 would use transportation funds instead of toll funds to pay for increasing to debt payments and operating costs.
“I sponsored this legislation to stabilize and keep from increasing Tacoma Narrows Bridge tolls until the bonds are fully paid off,” Sen. Steve O’Ban, R-University Place, stated. “A vote against was a vote to let tolls rise up to $8 or more, according to a recent DOT study. I am grateful that every Pierce County senator and House member supported the bill, with one exception.”
HB 2990 has passed the House and Senate and will now head to Governor Jay Inslee to sign it into law. If the bill becomes law, it will authorize loans for approximately $85 million to the Tacoma Narrows Bridge from 2019 to 2031.
