REI cuts off orders from parent business of gun manufacturer

Mar 2, 2018 - 05:52 PM

In a March 1 statement, REI announced that it will place a hold on future orders of products from Vista Outdoor.

Vista Outdoor, which sells products through REI, recently acquired several companies. Many of those companies, including Giro, Bell, Camelback, Camp Chef, and Blackburn, are already partners with REI. One of the companies Vista Outdoor now owns is Savage Arms, a gun manufacturer.

“REI does not sell guns,” the company’s statement explained. “We believe that it is the job of companies that manufacture and sell guns and ammunition to work towards common sense solutions that prevent the type of violence that happened in Florida last month.”

After REI learned that Vista Outdoor did not intend to release a public statement about its relationship with Savage Arms, the retailer decided to postpone its future Vista Outdoor orders.

“Companies are showing they can contribute if they are willing to lead. We encourage Vista to do just that,” REI’s statement read.
