Federal Way Sears closure another sign of retailer's struggles
The Commons in Federal Way will lose one of its anchor stores in early April with the closure of its Sears department store.
Associates at the store were informed on Jan. 4, with eligible workers receiving severance and the opportunity to apply for open positions at remaining area locations. The closure is one of 39 nationwide announced by Sears Holdings, along with the shuttering of another 64 Kmart stores also owned by the company.
A statement from Sears Holdings said the company will “continue to close some unprofitable stores as we transform our business model so that our physical store footprint and our digital capabilities match the needs and preferences of our members.”
Also among the announced closures were the Kmart and Sears in Chehalis, both set for early April.
The closures are the latest in a discouraging trend for the struggling former retail giant, which closed 358 Sears and Kmart stores in 2017. After this latest round of shutdowns, the Sears chain will shrink to some 500 locations nationwide, with Kmart at about 400; Sears Holdings will have slashed its store count by over 25 percent in fiscal year 2017.
