Stopgap bill ends federal shutdown, brings furloughed workers back

Jan 22, 2018 - 06:18 PM

The three-day government shutdown has effectively ended, thanks to a stopgap bill that passed after GOP leaders in the Senate promised to consider legislation to protect young, undocumented immigrants enrolled in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policy.

The bill funds the federal government for another three weeks, paving the way for President Donald Trump to sign it into law this evening and bring thousands of federal employees back to work the following day.

The agreement mustered 81 votes on the Senate floor today, with the House following with its approval via 266-150 vote.

The new bill also extends the popular Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) for another six years.
