Tacoma, Olympia among top 25 "growth cities"

Jan 9, 2018 - 05:33 PM

After releasing its “growth state” rankings on Monday, U-Haul released its Top 25 “growth cities” of 2017 today, with two South Sound cities making the cut.

Tacoma (fifth overall) and Olympia (11th) were the only two Washington cities on the list. The national relocation firm had cited the two yesterday as cities that helped fuel Washington’s rise to sixth in its growth state rankings.

Growth cities, like growth states, are calculated by the net gain of one-way truck rentals entering a city compared to those leaving it.

"U-Haul migration trends data is among the most sought after in the industry because it is the most comprehensive," U-Haul Executive Vice President Stuart Shoen said. "We dot the map in more places with more equipment and reflect the migration patterns of more do-it-yourself movers than anyone else."

Topping the 2017 list: Tempe, Ariz., with Boise, Id.; Miami; Atlanta; and Tacoma rounding out the top five.

Beating Olympia out for the next spots in the top 10 were Sacramento; Pittsburgh; McKinney, Tex.; Richmond, Va.; and Jersey City, N.J.
