Big jump in Q1 retail sales

The state Department of Revenue reported first quarter taxable retail sales for the year that were 8.9 percent higher than last year, topping $32 billion. 

Retail trade, which is a subset of all taxable retail sales, rose 5.1 percent to reach $13.9 billion.

Pierce County remains the second-largest marketplace in the state at $3.36 billion, up 8.7 percent in the first three months of 2016 compared to last year. Thurston County had a gain of 8.6 percent year-over-year, reporting $1.1 billion in taxable retail sales. Tacoma remains third on the list of cities, with $1.14 billion, up 8.2 percent from 2015.

New and used auto dealers together accounted for $3 billion in sales, up by 9.7 percent. A much smaller sector, drug and health stores, reported sales rose by 18.4 percent.
