From Tacoma roots to China sweet-tooths

Jul 11, 2016 - 01:35 PM

Candy-maker Mars Incorporated, which started 105 years ago in Tacoma, today announced an integrated online and offline business partnership with Alibaba Group, China’s giant retailer.

Six Mars brands -- Dove, Snickers, M&Ms, Extra, Pedigree and Royal Canin -- will be available on Alibaba platforms. For the first time, all of Mars’ brands in China will also be available online to consumers through its various Tmall flagship stores.

In April, Snickers and TFBoys, a popular boy band in China, launched a joint marketing campaign and sold in three days almost the same amount as was snacked up in all of 2015.

Mars Inc. has grown from its South Sound roots to become one of the largest manufacturers in the world, with net sales of more than $33 billion in six business segments, including pet care, chocolates, Wrigley gums, foods, drinks and symbioscience.
