New hospital planned in Tacoma

Jul 28, 2016 - 07:03 PM

CHI Franciscan Health and publicly traded Kindred Healthcare Inc. today announced plans to build and operate a 60-bed inpatient rehabilitation hospital in Tacoma. The project has already received the required state Certificate of Need.

According to a release from the parties, a joint venture will be created and Kindred will manage day-to-day operations when it opens early in 2018. This is one of the 90 largest private employers in the nation and a Fortune 500 healthcare services firm with annual revenues of approximately $7.2 billion. Its 102,000 employees work in 46 states.

In-patient rehab hospitals typically serve adults recovering from a stroke, neurological disease, injury to the brain or spinal cord and other long-term illnesses or injuries.

Tuesday of this week, Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup, part of MultiCare Health Systems, received state approval to expand its rehab hospital unit from 25 to 48 beds, with that project to be completed by summer 2018.

CHI Franciscan Health is reported to be the third-largest nonprofit health system in the country, with operations in 19 states. It has more than 100 primary and specialty care clinics in Pierce, Kitsap and King counties with eight hospitals.
