JBLM hiring event to showcase apprenticeships, logistics
Transitioning military looking for local work can network with more than 80 employers next week at a hiring event at Joint Base Lewis-McChord.
The event, set for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 19 at American Lake Conference Center on JBLM’s Ft. Lewis North. The quarterly hiring event is sponsored by Goodwill’s Military and Veteran’s Affairs and Operation: Goodjobs, a JBLM-focused program that provides free employment support to transitioning military members, veterans and their families.
This quarter’s hiring event will feature ApprenticeshipUSA, a program of the U.S. Department of Labor. The federal government wants to encourage more apprenticeship programs to help give American workers – especially veterans – the skills they need to fill some of the 6 million job openings in the United States, according to administration officials.
“Apprenticeships hold great promise in helping American workers acquire the skills they need to get good jobs while ensuring companies can attract the talent required to succeed in this fast-moving global economy,” said Labor Secretary R. Alexander Acosta.
“We think these apprenticeships will be a great opportunity for many of our transitioning military member, especially in the transportation and logistics career fields – two of Washington's leading industries,” said Christina Lipin, Military and Veteran Services program manager.
This quarter’s event will also include the participation of FASTPORT, the transportation and logistics partner with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s Hiring Our Heroes program.
“Of course, we will have more than 50 other local, regional and national employers from dozens of different career fields … and they also want to talk to job seekers,” said Lipin. “However, don’t make the mistake of thinking that an employer is focused only on their core business. For instance, many transportation and logistics companies at this hiring event are also looking to fill positions in sales, analytics, IT, human resources and other career fields.”
