SPSCC nursing program takes steps toward accreditation

Jul 20, 2017 - 05:45 PM

The Nursing Program at South Puget Sound Community College has officially been granted initial candidacy status from the National League for Nursing Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation.

SPSCC’s candidacy status starts July 2017. The pre-accreditation status is the first step for the nursing program to achieve national accreditation within a three-year timeline.

The program applied for pre-accreditation status in early 2017 and was informed of its approval June 2017. The next step in the process requires SPSCC to submit a self-study report and schedule an on-site evaluation.

“This pre-accreditation phase speaks to the quality and forward movement of our program,” Associate Dean of Nursing Laurie Choate said. She expects the self-study and evaluation to happen by fall of 2018.

Upon the decision by the NLN CNEA on the quality of instruction from the evaluation and report, the program could earn national accreditation for up to the next six years. Currently, the nursing program is fully approved by the state through the Nursing Care Quality Assurance Commission.
