Growing Places Thrift Store opens in Chehalis

Growing Places Farm and Energy Park, a local nonprofit with the mission of educating and empowering teens in Lewis County, announced the grand opening of a Growing Places Thrift Store in Chehalis. The store opened June 15, but it will host a grand opening event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on July 15, featuring light refreshments, prizes and a ribbon cutting. The event will take place at the thrift store at 1757 National Avenue, Suite 3, in Chehalis.

U.S. Bank taps Roberts to head area branches

U.S. Bank has promoted Thomas Roberts to the position of region manager and head of U.S. Bank’s branch network for the Washington Metropolitan Region. He succeeds Chris Heman, who became president of U.S. Bank in Washington earlier this year. Roberts is a 23-year banking veteran, starting as a teller and working his way into top leadership positions. Most recently, he was a district manager for U.S. Bank in the San Francisco region, where he had been for 8 years. In his new role, he will lead 650 employees at 70 branches in Seattle, Tacoma, Olympia, Bellevue, Everett and the surrounding areas.

Niagara Bottling to open Frederickson plant

Niagara Bottling, LLC, the largest family-owned bottled water manufacturer in the United States, has announced plans to open a state-of-the-art bottling facility in Pierce County. This will be Niagara's first site in the Pacific Northwest, joining 13 others around the country. The new 311,000-square-foot facility in Randles Business Park in the Frederickson Industrial Area will initially create 36 jobs and make a capital investment of approximately $50 million. The facility will serve the company's customers throughout the region.

Transportation package passes in House revote

Supporters of the transportation package known as the Gateway Project, which would expand State Route 167 from Puyallup to Tacoma, have a small reason to celebrate. The House of Representatives approved the $10B package on a 51-41 revote Thursday, after falling one vote short the day before. The package will move on to the Senate, where it will be voted on Friday.

Transportation package falls one vote short in House

After months of gaining momentum, the plan for completing State Route 167 as part of the Gateway Project was brought to a halt in the House of Representatives Wednesday afternoon. The House failed to pass the transportation package by one vote, with 48 in favor, 42 against and 7 excused, according to the Port of Tacoma’s Complete State Route 167 blog. Tim Thompson, a SR-167 coalition consultant, said a revote could take place as early as tomorrow though. Recreational vehicle fans often enjoy the facilities of Washington state parks, so it was a natural connection that brought financial support to the system that is suffering under budget cutbacks. From two recent trade shows produced in Puyallup and Seattle by MHRV, a trade association of manufactured homes and RV manufacturers, dealers and vendor organizations, some box office revenue was donated to Washington State Parks Foundation. Nat'l jobs growth continues in May

Employers, largely in the private sector, created another 175,000 new jobs in May, according to today’s report from U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, and the unemployment rate nationally was essentially unchanged at 7.6 percent.
