Jun 30, 2017 - 04:02 PM

The 62nd Airlift Wing at Joint Base Lewis-McChord has announced a coming change of command ceremony for July 14th. Col. Leonard Kosinski will turn over his joint command as wing commander and Air Force Senior Service Component commander at JBLM.

Col. Rebecca Sonkiss, most recently vice commander of 455th Air Expeditionary Wing at Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan, will take over, becoming the first female to lead the McChord-based flying unit.

During his tenure as wing commander, Kosinski assured the readiness of more than 2,400 active airmen and civilian personnel, as well as 48 permanently assigned C-17 Globemaster aircraft to support worldwide airlift and airdrop operations. The units have helped their parent Air Mobility Command in the delivery of more than seven million passengers and three million tons of cargo in support of U.S. overseas contingency operations since Sept. 11, 2001.

Col. Sonkiss is a graduate of U.S. Air Force Academy, where she was part of the parachute competition team, and is a command pilot and instructor pilot for C-17s with almost 4,200 hours of flight time.
