Report: IAM pulls out of S.C.

Jun 21, 2017 - 02:42 PM

After failing twice to win a union authorization vote among Boeing workers at the South Carolina operation, it appears International Association of Machinists (IAM) will give up, at least for now.

Charleston Regional Business Journal reported today the a small organizing office near the Boeing plant in North Charleston is now empty, three years after it opened in efforts to persuade factory workers to join the IAM union.

According to the article by Liz Segrist, the first vote was canceled just days before it was scheduled to take place in April 2015. A second attempt actually occurred in February 2017, but almost three-quarters of those voting rejected the bid for unionization.

Recent statistics from the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics show South Carolina is the least-unionized state in the nation, a fact not lost on Boeing managers when they chose to open a second production line for commercial airline products there.
