19th straight Fortune honor for REI

Mar 8, 2016 - 05:04 PM

One of the 100 best workplaces in the nation resides right here in the South Sound.

REI placed 26th on Fortune’s 2016 list of “100 Best Companies To Work For,” up from 58th on last year’s list. Among the employment perks cited in REI’s high ranking: $60 million of company funding toward its incentive plan and profit-sharing contributions, health care benefits for part-timers, and two annual “Yay Days” — paid time off for employees to enjoy REI’s outdoor gear outside.

It’s the 19th straight appearance for REI on the annual ranking, and the Kent-based outdoor retailer is one of five companies that have been listed every year since the list’s compilation began in 1998.

The co-op was tops among Washington companies on the list, surpassing Perkins Coie (37th), Nordstrom (92nd) and Slalom (100th).

“We are deeply grateful to be recognized again as a great place to work. Our founders put people first more than 76 years ago and today we still center our lives around the outdoors,” said Jerry Stritzke, REI president and CEO. “We connect people with one another and the outdoors and that’s what makes this a fun job. It’s what makes things like #OptOutside and Yay Days possible. It is an honor to lead REI and the amazing people who make up the co-op community."
