A 90-year-old Tacoma nonprofit senior living community, Franke Tobey Jones, is planning a major expansion.

According to an announcement released on Monday, the expansion will increase the number of seniors from 190 to 280, and provide additional independent, assisted living, memory care and skilled nursing options, as well as expanded wellness and Senior University Classes.

“Investing in this new expansion will help us serve more people with even more needed services and ensure we continue to live our mission of enriching and extending the quality of lives for seniors in our community,” said CEO Mark Gustafson.

The expansion, which is in early planning states at the moment, will happen in three phases.

The first is a new “state-of-the-art” health center and memory care community and a new Puget Sound view independent living apartment building.

The second phase is the new “Aging in Place” independent living apartment building, complete with an enhanced wellness center, auditorium, bistro, game room, long, business/computer room, library and roof top deck. According to the nonprofit, it’s designed for an active senior lifestyle, but any resident can still get assisted living service if they need it.

Phase three is a renovation of the historic original building and the Lillian Pratt Building.

Marathon Development of Bellevue will provide master planning and development services, and LRS Architects of Portland will provide the architectural design.

A series of community meetings will be scheduled to include residents, families and surrounding neighbors in the decision making.
