Several South Sound projects on Sound Transit 3 draft
While much of the attention may be placed on Seattle projects, the South Sound is getting some love on the Sound Transit 3 draft project list, too.
The most notable project would complete the “light rail spine” from Tacoma to Everett,” including stops in Kent/Des Moines, Federal Way and all the way down to the Tacoma Dome.
And, as has been discussed before, the Tacoma Link Extension is included, comprising six stations from downtown to Tacoma Community College.
The plan would also include improvements to “bus speed and reliability” between East Pierce County cities and the Sumner Sounder Station, as well as improvements to bus reliability along Pacific Avenue in downtown Tacoma.
The South Sounder train would get attention, too, with capital investments in access improvements, platform extensions and track and signal upgrades. Moreover, the Sounder commuter rail would extend to the Tillicum neighborhood in Lakewood and DuPont. A study would be commissioned to look at the idea of extending commuter rail to Orting.
All tallied up, the entire proposal would add 58 miles of light rail and 39 stations, establishing "a truly regional 108-mile system that connects cities from Everett to Tacoma and from Seattle to Issaquah, providing 525,000 people congestion free service each day," a press release from Sound Tranist states.
“Sound Transit 3 delivers on the promise of a truly regional mass transit system for generations to come,” said Sound Transit Board Chair and King County Executive Dow Constantine. “The public input we receive will help us shape the best final plan that will be on the November ballot.”
