Mar 31, 2016 - 06:03 PM

Today, Thurston Economic Development Council announced the winners of its 2015 Business Recognition Awards, with honorees recognized at a luncheon at the Red Lion Hotel in Olympia.

Lacey-based South Sound Parent to Parent, which offers a variety of programs to help families of kids and adults with special needs, won in the Nonprofit category.

New Business of the Year went to Single Handed Consulting, led by brother-sister duo Kevin and Katie Leneker. The company, which started in 2014, has grown to 21 employees, serving referrals from the Department of Labor & Industry and private firms to retrain injured workers.

Welch’s Appliance won Small Business of the Year — the company’s first such recognition in its 36 years of operation. Founded in 1980 by Ross Welch, the company repairs and refurbishes home appliances; after Ross passed away, granddaughter Amanda Warren joined his widow, Alice, in keeping the company moving forward.

Corporate Employer of the Year was won by Batdorf & Bronson Coffee Roasters, which has a roaster and two retail locations in Olympia, with other facilities in Atlanta.

Other businesses and organizations named as finalists for the awards included KAOS Community Radio, Olympia/Thurston County Crime Stoppers, Cross Fit Lacey Training Day, The Lanai Cafe, GHB Insurance, Washington Business Bank, Derma Medical Spa, Capital Medical Center, and Stormans Inc.
