Family-owned McLendon sells
The Kent location of McLendon Hardware represents the iconic appearance of the family-owned company's seven stores, all of which are being sold to a national chain of retail outlets effective next month.
The 90-year-old, fourth-generation regional group of store, McLendon Hardware, has agreed to be acquired by Central Network Retail Group, a multi-brand retail chain operating 90 hardware stores and lumberyards across 11 states. The transaction is expected to close in April.
Company President Gail McLendon said the move was inspired by a desire for continued growth throughout the Puget Sound region and beyond. At present, McLendon employs more than 500 Team Members and operates seven independent hardware stores located in Tacoma, Kent, Sumner, Puyallup, White Center, Woodinville and the original (and largest) location in Renton.
The decision to sell McLendons evolved over several years, according to family executives.
“Over a lengthy period, McLendon’s looked at many alternatives for keeping our brand culture and legacy intact,” its president said. “We were determined to provide stability for our Team Members and to open new stores. We wanted a partner more than a buyer.”
McLendon’s name will remain the same under its new ownership and the company will continue to be managed by Gail and Mike McLendon, with their seasoned executive and store manager teams.
