Summit to discuss construction employment tomorrow

Mar 21, 2017 - 05:02 PM

“Tacoma Works,” a summit focused on boosting construction employment in Tacoma and Pierce County, will kick off tomorrow at the Greater Tacoma Convention and Trade Center, bringing industry stakeholders together to discuss the challenges facing the field.

Mayor Marilyn Strickland will convene the summit, and contractors, job trainers and workforce development agencies will discuss strategies to raise interest and employment in skilled trades, the types of jobs that are in the most demand, and what can be done to help meet that demand.

“From residential and commercial buildings to highways, city streets and transit, the Puget Sound region will see unprecedented public and private investment of over $60 billion in the next decade and beyond,” said Strickland. “I want to make sure that residents in the greater Tacoma area are prepared for these family-wage jobs. General contractors are already seeing a labor crunch, so this initiative will develop policies and plans to get more people trained in skilled crafts and construction trades.”

The conversation is especially relevant considering the ongoing rebound of the construction industry locally. A recent report from the Association of General Contractors of America indicated that the Tacoma-Lakewood metropolitan area saw 11 percent growth between 2015 and 2016, making it the 14th fastest growing region in the country for construction employment.

The half-day event will start at 8 a.m.
