T/PC edc celebrates ‘interesting’ year

Mar 1, 2017 - 04:15 PM

As more than 400 investors, business leaders and local government officials gathered for the annual luncheon of Economic Development Board for Tacoma Pierce County, its President Bruce Kendall recounted 2016 as “a very interesting year.”

He reported on successful projects, like the new

  • 311,000 sq.ft. FedEx Ground facility in Fife, where up to 300 full- and part-time package handlers transfer up to 18,000 parcels an hour at peak time.
  • New construction at Frederickson Industrial Park on Mitsui-Soko (USA) of Japan for a 200,000 sq.ft. warehouse and cold storage facility to serve Toray Composite America, a supplier to Boeing’s plant there.
  • And NewCold, based in the Netherlands, which is building a large scale automated cold stores and refrigerated transport facility in Tacoma, to serve key clients such as Trident Seafoods.

The EDB also announced its 2017 “Excellent 10” awards winners, highlighting significant new economic development projects completed this year. See the complete list at this link.

Point Ruston, a multi-use and award-winning development along the shore of Commencement Bay, where the Asarco Smelter once processed copper ore, received the 2016 “Golden Shovel” recognition for its multi-year achievements. Lead developer Mike Cohen and his partner/son, Leonard, accepted the award.

“Our newest phase, Baker Condominiums, were just released and within 72 hours, agents were processing more than 30 purchase transactions,” Leonard Cohen announced. “This must be the fastest new project sales pace ever in Pierce County.”

The Cohens acknowledged a 100-percent occupancy rate in their earlier phases of condos and apartments, which is encouraging the next stage of 218 apartments to be unveiled soon. Unique in this work is that 20 percent of the units in this multi-family project will be linked to “affordable rates,” as designated by City of Tacoma’s support.
