World Trade Center confirms handoff to Chamber

Mar 24, 2017 - 05:40 PM

An email from World Trade Center Tacoma this week confirmed the organization’s operational handoff to the Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber, informing recipients that the two groups had signed a letter of intent for an interim management agreement.

Gary Brackett, former business manager at the Chamber, came out of retirement on March 7 to become WTC Tacoma’s interim executive director; currently, he works three days a week at the nonprofit’s office.

“The World Trade Center board, which remains in charge, is going through a due diligence process with the Chamber of Commerce to decide how they might proceed in a management agreement between the two organizations,” said Brackett. “We’re still doing our contract with the MBDA (Minority Business Development Agency), we’re still working with the City of Tacoma and the Port of Tacoma. We’re still doing our best to have quality service with both our members and our clients. We’re continuing our intern program which involves a number of international students in the area. We’re still doing workshops and seminars.”

A May trade mission to China remains on the agenda, confirmed Brackett.

The initial agreement between the Chamber and WTC calls for a 30-day due diligence period, Brackett said, though, “quite frankly,” he added, “I think that’s more of a soft deadline. I think that both parties, if you will, want to make sure that they know what they’re offering and what they’re taking up so that the WTC is best able to provide services to the area moving forward.”
