State Farm awards $20K to Summer Jobs 253
State Farm Insurance awarded the City of Tacoma a $20,000 grant to Summer Jobs 253. The program helps high school juniors and seniors in Tacoma find employment.
Students in the program are paid for up to 120 hours of work, earn high school credits, learn new job skills, gain experience managing their own money, and acquire access to new opportunities. The program also provides students with transportation assistance and employers with payroll functions for student workers including wage and L&I management.
Summer Jobs 253 began in 2013 with a program of 50 students. As of 2017, 753 total students had participated. The number of employers hiring students through the program grew to 75.
“State Farm has always been a good community partner and we, along with our other partners at WorkForce Central, Tacoma Public Schools, Tacoma Community College, the REACH Center, and Tacoma Community House, thank them for their support of Summer Jobs 253," Tacoma Mayor Victoria Woodards stated. "This grant funding will help with our ongoing efforts to develop Tacoma's workforce and, through our continued refinement of this important program, provide Tacoma’s youth with access to quality opportunities."
