Scholarships available for Goodwill computer skills program

May 31, 2017 - 04:25 PM

Sales from Goodwill’s thrift store operations will help fund new advanced skills training at the nonprofit’s Work Opportunity Center in Tacoma, as well as its facilities in Yakima and Longview.

Sixty-two scholarships are now available for the Advanced Computer & Office Skills Program, which teaches skills in basic website upkeep, cloud-based file management and computer hardware troubleshooting. There is no charge for textbooks or for the 10-week program itself, which also works to place graduates into internships, then initial jobs.

“This course features Word and Excel classes you would attend at the community college level,” says Aaron Tran, computer & office skills program coordinator for Goodwill of the Olympics and Rainier Region.  “And in addition, if students are interested in the information technology field, this is a great first look at the subject.”

Approximately 23 seats each are available in Tacoma and Longview, and 16 seats in Yakima for the June 12 and July 17 programs. Upon completion of the program, students will spend three weeks in an internship at a partner institution, such as Bates Technical College or Comprehensive Life Resources in Tacoma.
