First, several major industries have continued to stay strong and generate new jobs throughout the state, particularly manufacturing and health care, which "are pretty much recession-proof," said Cynthia Forland, director of the state LMEA department.

Happy Anniversary, Port of Tacoma

Pierce County citizens voted 95 years ago today to create the Port of Tacoma district on about 240 acres of land. The vessel Edmore was the first vessel to call the new port three years later in 1921. Today, the port district encompasses about 2,700 acres in the Tideflats industrial area. And Tacoma has grown into one of the top container ports in North America, in addition to being a major gateway to Asia and Alaska. There is more on the port’s history at its website.
