Crime data tags cities as ‘dangerous’

Nov 5, 2014 - 03:35 PM

A posting this morning from Movoto Real Estate Blog labeled Tacoma as the 5th most dangerous city in Washington, based on its analysis of F.B.I crime data from 2012.

Centralia, Auburn and SeaTac are within the Top 10 rankings, led by Tukwila as the most community where residents are in the most danger.

Just looking at F.B.I. numbers, Tacoma had the second most property crime and the second most total crime in the state. The truly unfortunate statistic was the high number of violent crimes reported in 2012, the fifth most.

The blog reported there were 505 assaults per 100,000 people -- the most in Washington’s top 10 list. Residents had a one in 68 chance of being the victim of an assault, and the even more depressing 1-in-14 chance of being the victim of a crime.

Centralia landed #7 on the “most dangerous” list because it was tied for the lead in the state with 12 murders per 100,000 residents in 2012. There were 481 violent crimes reported that year.

Auburn earned its infamous #8 place on the list because of a high rate of property crime and an overall total crime rate that was elevated. On the bright side, the blog noted, Auburn’s police department was able to respond to a reported crime within an average of under four minutes.
